You may had thought that these chewing gums that you chew every day have their roots only from the usa.Unfortunately my dear friends, this product comes straight from eastern Greece, from the island of Chios. You find it's main substance on mastic trees that produce 'mastiha' (aka mastic in english). It's hard and sticky to the touch but has a great taste.Mastiha trees only grow in Chios and nowhere else in Greece.(maybe other trees like this one produce mastic in other countries but this kind comes from Greece).
My great grandmother used to chew homemade chewing gum in her youth.Hard to make? Not at all.She used natural wax as a solvent and pure drops of mastic. The result was a hard piece of candy that turned into gum after chewing it.No sugar,no fat, good for teeth.
I don't mean that the chewing gum that you actually have in your mouth comes straight from Greece.Americans later on,in the 20th century discovered a way to make tasty chewing gums using chemical, artificial stuff and flavorings.
I suggest you should try a real, pure and healthy chewing gum.Wax and mastic sound wicked. But believe it or not, this chewing gum is extra tasty.
The proof? You can find many products around the world and especially in Greece, made from mastiha. From drinks and foods: ice cream (kaimaki) ,gums,ypovryxio,pastries,alcohols...To cosmetics: toothpaste, moisturising creams, cleansing creams, lip glosses, shampoos, body butters...even makeup.
